My experience at the new Malia, for those who didn't know this isn't their first location, hasn't ever been as good as the original Malia. I can't fault the service. We always receive excellent service. But the food has been lacking, especially considering the price and location. I think many of the high rankings are there because there isn't anything better in Battle Creek. My poor experience occurred when I took my wife out for dinner and we both ordered our favorite dish, the wild mushroom fettuccini. On first inspection the dish didn't look the same. It didn't taste the same either. It had yellow tomatoes in it, which I had never noticed before. The flavor was bland and the mushrooms were huge. A lot of large mushrooms sounds good but I found it wasn't good. The mushrooms were big but not flavorful. There were large pieces of stem that had a bitter flavor and the noodles were over cooked. OK, so I got a bad meal. Is that really worth 1 star even if I've never gotten a 5 start meal there? Not really until you consider that I complained in writing via email and have not received a response. I feel one star is warranted when receiving 3 star food and no response from the management.

This is a great little restaurant in downtown Battle Creek. I loved the food and the dining room, however the service was just a bit of a let-down. It seemed like a couple of tables were full of regulars when I was there and they were getting all of the attention. Even so, it still earned five stars.

Great birthday lunch today at Malia. Definitely important to call ahead for reservations around noon, although by the time we left, tables were opening up. Service was friendly and attentive, and the food was excellent. We shared the Melenzana and Sausage Linguini (perfect portions split by the kitchen for a $3 charge). The eggplant was sweet and tender, and the sauce had just enough fennel. For dessert we shared the Chocolate Decadence, flourless chocolate cake. Lovely presentation, comfortable atmosphere, and very friendly staff. Definitely recommend.

The service was horrifying. "Craft beer" only. I wouldn't even call the beer menu "craft". Waiting two hours for a peanut was clearly not worth it.

Best food in Battle Creek, no competition. Beef tenderloin tips or shank is always great. I have eaten here many times for lunch and dinner and have never been disappointed.

I should start this review by saying I have never been to the restaurant but recently went to a wedding that Was catered by Malia. Amazing food from start to finish. Delicious prosciutto and cheese appetizer to start. My favorite dish was the shrimp ravioli with a lobster cream sauce. So good. Very filling. Additionally, the tortellini and sausage with sweet peppers were seasoned and cooked to perfection. Looking forward to coming to the actual restaurant and I recommend them for catering!

Came here with family on a rainy weekday. Our waiter was very nice and knowledgeable. He directed us to trying the pasta dishes which did not disappoint. Perfect portions. The Michigan semi-dry Reisling was also a pleasant surprise. Kids devoured the spaghetti. Tiramisu was excellent. Atmosphere was relaxing with mix of families and business types. My only gripe was that I was expecting a more Mediterranean menu but really more Italian.

Best meal we've had in awhile! Awesome service!!! Our 7 year old was fussy with her meal and the chef came out and offered to make her something different. That is customer service at its highest!

The best restaurant in Battle Creek. The food and service always exceed my expectations.

Excellent special, the Australian Whagyu fillet (some places spell it Wagyu), while not inexpensive -- unbelievable cooked to perfection, tender and amazing flavor, no gristle -- worth the price if it is as good as ours were! Very tasty caprese flatbread special as well -- great appetizer! Very nice desserts too, IF you saved room! All in our party of five agreed this meal was sensational! Only issue was the wait staff had to be asked twice for some red pepper flakes, and they ran out of our first bottle of wine, and we had to switch -- the switch was very good too, though... ;)

Best food in Battle Creek, and a different menu every time we have been there. Fantastic atmosphere. The only thing I don't like is that the "specials" board is right behind some tables, so to read all about the specials you feel like you have to stare at the people eating under the board.

I have updated my rating to this place to 4 stars, because we have returned on multiple occasions, and the service has tremendously improved. In fact, we now have no complaints. The food is fantastic, the prices are reasonable and the service is what it should be. Best place in Battle Creek for a nice date.

My Mom brought me here when I came home for the holidays & I was extremely impressed. After going to culinary school & then moving to Northern California & having the opportunity to try a lot of great restaurants, I have, sadly become a food snob. :) I'm thrilled to see a great restaurant so close to my hometown. I'll be making the trip next time I'm in MI to visit family. The lobster ravioli was tender, and delicious & the portion was just the right amount to satisfy but not over fill. My Mom had the Pasta Carbonara, which was equally fabulous! I enjoyed a glass (or was it two?!) of the wine that our server, Michael recommended. I believe it was a Chilean red wine. Mom had a glass of the Moshin Chardonnay. If you like a buttery Chard, go for this one!! They're the only ones in MI serving this wine, so drink it & feel special as you cannot get it outside of Napa, CA. You're going to pay a higher price than you would at a chain restaurant, but you will have a great experience, I'm sure! Make a reservation!

We ate here this weekend with a group. I was visiting the area from San Francisco, CA. Wow! Very impressed- great wine list with reasonable prices and great range. Food was delicious. Service impeccable. Highly recommend!

Wow, nice restaurant Battle Creek. I met a colleague here for lunch. The server was very attentive to the menu and the specials for that day. On my way back to the restroom, I heard one of the owners bartering with a local person for fresh produce, which I thought was kind of cool. I ordered the cream of mushroom soup, which was delicious, along with a chicken pizza, also very good. The restaurant is beautiful on the inside and this whole area is really a beautiful area for Battle Creek. I will return, well done!

Stopped in on a busy Saturday night after a softball tournament all day at nearby Bailey Park in Battle Creek. Could not have enjoyed it more! We had called to request a reservation earlier the same day but none were avaiable (due to a large wedding party of 20+) but decided to stop by when we were downtown and they happily were able to accommodate us due to a cancellation. Service was very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Food and beverage recommendations were stellar. Both my wife and I enjoyed one of the specials - she had Grouper and I had the Swordfish and both chose the parmesan risoto. They will happily allow you to put any protein with different sides. We were seated near the open air kitchen and the head chef stopped over to say hello and offer total flexibility with combining dishes and preparation - nice guy! Both fish were done perfectly and the entire entree was nice and HOT the entire meal. Portion sizes were large (my wife took half home but I enjoyed mine so much I finished it). We also enjoyed two different wines by the glass (one red and another white - both great recommendations) and a delicious wild mushroom soup and house salad completed a great meal. Nice atmosphere - it's lively but not too noisy. Plenty of serving & kitchen staff who really hustle. They all seem to like each other and like working there. I agree with the other recommendations - and glad we were able to try it. You won't be disappointed. As others have said - it is not inexpensive but we felt it was worth the cost without question.

Excellent. From decor, to staff, to wine, to entrées. I struggled to find one dinner to order because I wanted them all. Well I guess I get to come back! Can't wait!!!

Walk down Michigan Avenue in Battle Creek on any given night (except for Sunday) and you'll find yourself drawn to the warm glow of light emanating from Malia. From the outside you see a packed bistro, full of happy families, work buds and people enjoying themselves. Enter through brown velvet curtains - they keep out the winter chill - and into the dining room and you're right there, steps away from a bustling open kitchen. There's rosemary in the air and the hint of bread baking. Overflowing bowls of fruit and vegetables sit atop the kitchen counter as totems for the healthy food you are about the receive. And for the most part, you can find a good meal here. You can even find a healthy meal here. If you skip the cream-laden mushroom soup - served inexplicably in a coffee mug that is placed in a bowl -- the soup is heavy and earthy, but cumbersome to eat. You can try a good standby of Chicken Marsala and be pleased with this better than average dish which is a bit heavy but satisfying. I've eaten here at least a dozen times and Malia has improved. My first dish was a salmon fillet over polenta in an olive oil soup. While not advertised as swimming in fat, the dish came with an easy cup of oil. As the restaurant got its groove going, the dishes lost their baths of oil. But the meat and seafood, specialties of the house, aren't always cooked to order or very well. To play it safe, go with a daily special. Salads are great. Desserts come from Continental Bakery and are highly regarded. The wine list is decent. If you're interested in eating at Malia, make a reservation. In a town starved for good food, this is the best thing going in Battle Creek. While it wouldn't wow a seasoned big city gourmand, the ideas here are right and the ambiance is good.

First expensive, high end restaurant I haven't left with buyers remorse. What fine dining should be.

Best restaurant in Battle Creek. Jeff Samson is a culinary genius. Eric, Boun, & the crew are second to none. Highly recommend the Flank Steak Peppardelle.

A true gem in Battle Creek. The portobella mushroom app is phenomenal and the "Rustic Sea" special (scallops, prawn) was amazing! A classy place for a date night. A little on the pricey side, but worth every penny.

I visited Malia last week for lunch and I was not disappointed. Mailia's is in the old location of Bici Bistro which closed in the summer of 2010. Malia is located in downtown Battle Creek next to Griffin Pub. The meals that my wife and I ate were delicious, and the service was great. I ordered the Penne Alla Pollo (Penne pasta tossed with grilled chicken, sweet shallot tomato sauce, peas, cream sherry, and grated parmesan). My wife had the Wild Mushroom Fettuccine, and it was superb. The only thing that I was not to hot about was that there was no fountain pop/soda, only bottled sodas that were not Coke/Pepsi etc. One thing that was nice is that many items had options for vegetarian, or add chicken, or beef for a couple of dollars extra. We had a great time at Malia, and will be going back for dinner soon. There are very few non-chain restaurants in Battle Creek, so this is a place that you must visit.

Happy to find Malia again. First dined there when it was in Marshall. Wonderful ambiance--certainly lives up to it's Bistro legacy. The seafood trilogy and the salted caramel gelato were the best entree and dessert I have had in a long while. Perfect service from Dave made this father's day dinner a real treat. We will dine here often.

This is definitely a place to try if you are downtown Battle Creek! It totally reminds me of all the restaurants on Main St in Ann Arbor. Kudos to the chef. Everything on the menu is great!

Malia is the best restaurant in Battle Creek for food. Prices are reasonable for lunch$8-13 and dinner $14-28. Salads are great. Everything is made fresh and from scratch for each customer so a dish can be altered if you don't like an item in it. It is small so if it is a busy day or romantic holiday plan to make a reservation. Battle Creek needs more good restaurants of this caliber.

Super good, homemade mediterranean food. Great local digs, which serves local fare. Good for lunch and dinner, then hop on over to the bar afterwards. Definitely check it out if you are a visitor/newbie to downtown Battle Creek. PS - everything on the menu is delicious. I've been there 4 times and have yet to be disappointed.

My husband took me to Malia for my birthday last weekend. It was a cozy, but very nice restaurant. It is the jewel of Battle Creek, MI! The staff was polite, attentive and the food was outstanding! From the salad to the dessert, from the iced tea to the Moscato D'Asti! Loved it!

We searched for a great restaurant to have dinner while traveling in Battle Creek to attend a concert at Firekeepers Casino. We landed on Malia after reading yelp reviews and every star this restaurant gets is well deserved! The place is adorable, on the main street of what looked like a charming downtown area. On this Saturday evening, Malia was buzzing with activity, full tables, busy chefs working in a beautiful open kitchen area and several people waiting to be seated. We had a 7pm reservation and were escorted to our table within 10 minutes of arrival. The menu was extensive and the large chalkboard in the dining room also listed several enticing specials for the evening. We really liked the fact that most of the seafood specials also came with some sort of pasta - for example the Grouper that my husband ordered also came with a butternut squash ravioli. They also had a Mahi Mahi on a bed of orecchiette pasta. We were pressed for time so we didn't order a salad or appetizer but the serving portions were more than generous so we left feeling full and satisfied after only a main course. The wine list was exciting - a great selection of red and white at very affordable prices - lots of bottles also came as a glass. I ordered the Geunoc Petite Syrah and my hubby ordered an Oregon Pinot Noir and we loved them both. I loved the petite syrah so much that I asked our server to bring back the wine list so I could make note of the label, instead she brought over the bottle and I was able to take a picture of it. Trish was delightful, friendly, efficient and made our dining experience even more enjoyable. Every server in the place said hello, made eye contact with you and really looked like they loved working at Malia. Our main courses consisted of the Grouper special and my Flank Steak Papardelle - excellent on both counts!! The steak was plentiful and tender with perfectly cooked wide noodles and a great balance of mushrooms and other ingredients. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite! We live more than an hour from Battle Creek and I was unimpressed by the concert venue (see my Firekeepers review) so it's unlikely we will return to BC for that purpose - but wouldn't hesitate to make the trip just for dinner at Malia - it was that good!

Definitely the priciest restaurant in downtown Battle Creek, but the food is delicious and has great presentation. I've been here for lunch during the week a few times and have always had great service. The food is not so much Mediterranean - an Italian theme dominates the menu with pastas and flatbreads. My absolute favorite is the creamy mushroom soup which is a must-have start to the meal. I also love the mushroom pasta and nuts & berries salad. The entree salads are huge portions and can be split with 2 people.

Malia is an amazing place and a rare find. You must eat at least one meal here if you're in Battle Creek. Best restaurant for at least an hour in any direction.

What a wonderful find! I never thought I would have one of my favorite culinary experiences in Battle Creek, but it happened. Beautiful interior, attentive staff, and dishes I can't stop thinking about. Everything was perfection, and I loved the fact that the Garden Risotto I ordered featured fresh picked vegetables from the Urbandale Community Garden. The Caesar Salad had blue cheese and blueberries - totally unexpected, but it worked beautifully. If you are in Battle Creek (or anywhere nearby) and you don't indulge in a fabulous meal at this gem, you'll be missing out.

Malia is OK. The service is good and the food is good. The space is extremely small. I went there for a date and they crammed us into an awkward corner. The lobster ravioli is so delicious I would recommend getting that. But it is also expensive as is most of the menu. If you manage not to get crammed in the corner the ambience is rather lovely. They have fresh flowers on every table and most of their ingredients are fresh and the menus changes quite often. The specials are always changing as well. Good find in Battle Creek.

One of my favorite restaurants in town and the surrounding area. They source a majority of their ingredients locally and their menus change seasonally. Love their mushroom soup! Also, their housemade hummus is delicious along with the local veggies they serve along with it! Sometimes for lunch, I would just get the hummus plate and a cup of their mushroom soup. Also, their portions are large.

Been a half dozen times and had a great experience each and every time. Grouper, hand cut Parmesan tortellini, Wagyu filet, scallops, blue cheese vinegarette, creme brûlée, salted Carmel dolce...not to mention a great wine and beer list. Lucky to have Malia's so close to home

A new Battle Creek restaurant that is trying to bring a little different experience to Battle Creek and succeeds! The owner Jeff is on site doing it in the kitchen and making sure every plate that comes out is right on and it shows. I've been multiple times (opening week and then over the last couple of months) there is no let down on quality. First nite there he knew the friend I was eating with and sent over a comp appetizer, a pear topped pizza. Holy %*%# who would have thought pear on pizza would be this good. Technically it was on flat bread but it was great. I then had lobster ravioli and a filet (med rare). FANTASTIC. Over the next several visits I've tried many things. The salads are great, soups are rich and filling and Jeff knows his pasta. Really hard to go wrong. The wait staff has always been friendly and quick to take care of you. All in all no problems. The only negative is that the main downtown road in front of the place is being torn up and worked on all summer so you have that going on out front. Oh well small price to pay for maybe the best restaurant in town.

I love this place. It has the best tasting food in Battle Creek, but you pay the price for it. I great mix of different blends of cuisine. There's a little something for everyone here without being overwhelming. This is the place I bring my fiance if I'm buying her a nice, expensive dinner.
